Students check out books every other visit. The media collection includes computer software, cd’s, videos and dvd’s. The center also has a computer lab with 29 computers and two printers. Library personnel assist students with our CCC and AR programs in the lab. All students in grades K-4th have regularly scheduled class time each week. The center is also available for teachers to bring in their classes to do research and work on these outstanding programs:
1. Computer Curriculum Coorporation program, or CCC as our students refer to it, is a tool for providing computer-based, individualized instruction for students in multiple subject areas, most notably reading and mathematics. The program emphasizes mastery learning and has frequent assessments built into the program. The purpose of using the program is to improve student achievement through individualized, computer-assisted instruction. Numerous classes come in to the center throughout the school year to do research for reports and speeches assigned by teachers. Students also visit the library for leisure reading throughout the school day.
2. The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program provides teachers and children a fun and exciting way to promote reading at home and in the classroom. A wide variety of books are marked with AR books in the Media Center of Hills to indicate that they are AR books. Students may read AR books and take the associated test to earn points toward milestone incentives, such as pencils, candy bars, and erasers. The kids love to watch their progress and teachers often involve the students in setting AR point goals for the year.
Other special activities include our annual book fair, Write & Read a Book program, word contests and Reading Bingo. The library media center is also the location of our Before/After School Care programs.
